Smart Water Meter and Remote Meter Reading
A smart water meter is a meter that can transfer the water consumption it measures to a data collection system via communication or pulse output. Remote reading allows staff to review period consumption without visiting each meter. The unit of data, timestamp and interrupt behavior are also important, as is the correct selection of the counter.

Difference between pulse output and Modbus
At the pulse output, the meter verifies how many liters each pulse represents. Missed pulse, contact bounce or power outage may cause registration error; input filtering and persistent total storage are designed. In the Modbus counter, the register address, data type, scale and byte order are mapped to the manufacturer's map. Even though two meters use the same protocol, their data maps may not be the same.
LoRaWAN and field coverage
In wireless meters, battery life, reporting frequency and signal conditions are evaluated together. Basement, metal panel and meter pit may affect communications. LoRaWAN device requires appropriate gateway and network server; Not every wireless meter works with the same network. During installation, connection loss and data retransfer are tested as well as the normal report.
Can it be added to existing meters?
If there is pulse or communication module support, data can be taken from the existing meter. Adding an image or external sensor to a mechanical meter is a separate engineering effort; accuracy is not guaranteed. If commercial invoicing is to be done, the legal metrology requirements of the measurement are also evaluated. The role of monitoring data and the official bill counter should be clearly separated.
Technical questions and answers
Can every water meter be read remotely?
Output, module and technical interface support should be checked.
What does impact value mean?
It is the volume represented by a pulse; for example, the liter/pulse value is verified from the meter.
Is internet required for LoRaWAN?
Communication with local radio is a separate architectural issue, and gateway and server connection are separate architectural issues.
Why might the counter total be different with software?
Initial value, pulse loss, scale or period matching errors are investigated.
