01What is ISO 50001 and who is it suitable for?
ISO 50001:2018 provides a framework for establishing, implementing, maintaining and improving the energy management system. Energy-using organizations such as hotels and manufacturing facilities can consider this approach when managing their energy performance.
02Make energy use visible in your facility
In an example hotel application, consumption areas such as main electricity input, air conditioning, kitchen and laundry can be monitored separately. The first step is to list existing meters and equipment; is to determine which data will be monitored, at what frequency and by whom. Energy sources other than electricity are also evaluated according to the scope of the facility.
03Key energy uses and measurement plan
Equipment with high consumption or improvement potential may be prioritized for inspection. For example, the consumption of a ventilation group that remains open outside working hours can be investigated. Reports become more consistent when measuring points, meter units, recording intervals, and how missing data will be handled are clarified.
04Energy performance indicators: EnPI
Indicators such as kWh/guest-night in a hotel or kWh/product in a manufacturing facility can be used to compare periods. For example, if there is 12,000 kWh electricity consumption and 600 guest-nights in the same period, the result is 20 kWh/guest-nights. This is just a calculation example; It is not a target or industry benchmark. The scope and periods of data being compared must be the same.
05Energy baseline and normalization
Reference consumption provides a starting point for evaluating subsequent periods. However, decreasing total consumption does not always mean increased productivity; Hotel occupancy or production quantity may have decreased. In an example analysis, occupancy, operating time and outside temperature can be examined together. When there is appropriate data and justification, the impact of these variables can be modeled using methods such as regression; The accuracy of the model should also be checked.
06Measure and track improvement
For example, when the operating schedule of a piece of equipment is changed, previous and subsequent consumption can be compared under similar operating conditions. If the action taken, the person responsible, the application date and the expected effect are recorded, it will be easier to follow the result. In case of unexpected increases, meter data and field conditions should be examined together. Measurement alone does not save money; The result depends on the improvements implemented.
07How does WattDog energy monitoring support this process?
Fetrion WattDog; It provides measurement infrastructure for central monitoring of meter and analyzer data, panel-based consumption evaluation and reporting. Existing meters, communication facilities and points to be monitored are evaluated during the project. Software and hardware support the data side of management system efforts; It does not replace certification.
08Difference with ISO 46001
ISO 50001 focuses on energy management, ISO 46001 focuses on water efficiency management. Two areas can be monitored together in the same facility; However, energy and water indicators are not interchangeable. Electricity consumption kWh and water consumption should be evaluated in their own units such as m³ or liters.
09Current standard and certification
According to the information published by ISO, ISO 50001:2018 was reviewed and confirmed in 2024. Additionally, an amendment regarding climate action was published in 2024. In practice, the current standard text and its amendments should be taken as basis. Purchasing an energy monitoring system alone does not provide ISO 50001 certification or a specific savings rate.
Share your current infrastructure and needs; Let's determine the scope of measurement, hardware and software together.
