ISO 46001 is a standard for water-using organizations to systematically manage water efficiency. It brings together monitoring, measurement, documentation and continuous improvement approach within a management framework.
ISO 46001:2019 defines the requirements and usage guidance for establishing, implementing and maintaining a water efficiency management system in organizations of different types and sizes. Hotels and industrial facilities can consider this framework when managing water use.
Standard; It addresses the approach of reducing water use, utilizing alternative water sources where appropriate, and reusing water. Applications for monitoring and leak detection can support mitigation. Alternative source and reuse options should be evaluated taking into account the requirements of the intended use and relevant conditions.
In an example hotel application, the main meter, sub-meters and important consumption areas can be determined first. It becomes easier to follow consumption reports when data frequency, units, responsible parties and how missing records will be handled are defined. This sample approach does not replace the implementation plan to be prepared specifically for the facility.
Indicators such as water consumption per liter/guest-night in a hotel and water consumption per product in a production facility can be used. For example, for 100,000 liters of consumption and 500 guest-nights, the result is 200 liters/guest-night. This is just an example of calculation; It is not a target or industry benchmark. The comparison should also be re-evaluated when the period, facility scope and activity level change.
Comparing the main input and sub-meter totals can make visible the differences to be investigated. Mismatching measurement times, meter errors or unmeasured usage areas may also cause differences. For this reason, it is necessary to check the data and the field together instead of interpreting each difference as a leak.
ISO 50001 focuses on energy management and ISO 46001 focuses on water efficiency management. Although energy and water data can be monitored together in the same facility, their measurement units, usage areas and indicators are different. kWh measurement in electricity consumption and m³ or liter measurement in water consumption are evaluated separately.
An amendment to ISO 46001:2019 regarding climate action was published in 2024. Application and certification evaluations should be based on the current text of the standard and its amendments. Purchasing a monitoring device or software alone does not provide management system certification.
