What is an Energy Monitoring System? Measurement, Reporting

Energy monitoring system; It is a structure that records consumption data received from meters and analyzers, compares it over time and turns it into understandable reports. It goes beyond the total on the electric bill to show which section, piece of equipment, or period of operation needs to be examined.

How does energy monitoring work?

Measurement points are monitored with meters or energy analyzers. The data acquisition layer transmits these measurements to the software; The software also stores it with timestamp, unit and measurement point information. The appropriate structure for the facility is not just about the graphics on the screen: it is also important what data the existing meters give, the continuity of communication and how missing records are marked. It should not be assumed that every device can be directly connected to the system.

kW, kWh and consumption comparison

kW refers to the power at a specific moment, and kWh refers to the energy used over a period of time. For example, a load operating for two hours with a constant power of 10 kW uses 20 kWh energy; This example is not a consumption commitment of an actual equipment. Working hours, production quantity or hotel occupancy should also be examined when evaluating monthly totals. Lower total consumption does not always mean higher efficiency.

In which areas is it used?

Kitchen, laundry and air conditioning in hotels; In production facilities, lines and auxiliary systems can be treated as separate measurement points. In a sample investigation, consumption seen while the business is closed may trigger an investigation of equipment that remains open. Monitoring alone does not save money; the results need to be evaluated by those responsible and appropriate improvements implemented. Comparisons made within the same period and within the same scope are more meaningful.

What should you prepare before choosing a system?

The panel and meter list, existing device models, measurement points, network infrastructure and required reports should be prepared together. Recording frequency, data retention period and user authorizations should be clearly written in the offer. Data can be used to monitor energy performance in ISO 50001 studies; Purchasing a device does not provide management system certification. The installation evaluation should also include maintenance and reporting responsibilities.

Technical questions and answers

Does the electricity bill and the monitoring system provide the same information?

Shows the invoice period total. Sub-measuring points and time-based recordings enable a more detailed analysis of where and when consumption occurs.

Can the same meter be used for every facility?

No. Measurement scope, electrical infrastructure, communication and existing devices should be evaluated together; The selection is made on a facility-specific basis.

Does energy monitoring guarantee the savings rate?

No. Savings depend on operating conditions and changes applied based on measurement results. It would not be right to give a fixed percentage.

Is cloud connection mandatory?

It depends on the architecture. For local or cloud-based options, access, backup and disconnection behavior should be evaluated separately.
